Happy Abolition Day, Costa Rica!
December 1
Historical Context
On December 1st, we commemorate one of Costa Rica’s most remarkable milestones—the abolition of the military in 1948. This historic decision redirected resources toward education, health, and environmental protection, shaping Costa Rica into the peaceful, forward-thinking nation we love today.
The abolition of Costa Rica’s army took place on December 1, 1948, when President José Figueres Ferrer announced the decision at the Bellavista Barracks, now the National Museum. This marked a bold shift towards peace, allowing resources to be redirected to education, healthcare, and social welfare.
The National Museum
The museum hosts ceremonies on Abolition Day to celebrate this milestone.

Within the National Museum, you will take a photographic tour through the various spaces of the Cuartel Bellavista during its operation in the 1920s to 1940s and its subsequent transformation to house the National Museum of Costa Rica, once the army was abolished in 1948. Since then, it has become a symbol of Costa Rican history and culture.
In addition to seeing the architecture of the turrets, walls, inner courtyards, corridors, staircases, passages, embrasures, and battlements, the images also allow you to appreciate multiple scenes of the small capital city, its inhabitants, and the social dynamics of a bygone era.
Impacts of Abolition
The funds formerly allocated to the military were invested in public education and universal healthcare, leading to significant improvements in literacy and life expectancy. The abolition positioned Costa Rica as a leader in peace, sustainability, and human rights, attracting ecotourism and setting an example of demilitarization.
